The coaching team have made only enforced changes to the team that beat Keswick. Andrew Miller, Jesse Thompson are both carrying minor knocks but will be back in the reckoning for the Heaton Moor game on 18th September. Both England Heinie Jonker and Steven Douglas should also be pushing for selection for the 18th. In addition Norman Reilly should be back from honeymoon and raring to go.

Scan results are awaited for Jaques Rowe. Dickie Miller and James Ravell have resumed training.

A personal tribute from David Wilson

Jackie Barton-Life Member

Jackie was an Icon of the Black Reds, so faithful to the Club and Rugby u n i o n in general. He played for three decades in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, the lean years of social rugby and turned out in all positions, mainly due to the fact when players failed to turn up. Jackie was always there to bridge that gap, there were times in later years when virtually just a supporter he would turn out for the opposition when they were short. Just to make sure a game of rugby would take place.

He was a mentor for young players beginning their sporting career, guiding and protecting them in early life.
I was lucky, like a few more of the older generation to have played with such a stalwart.

Jackie was made a Life Member of the club three years ago, for service to the Black Reds and Rugby u n i o n.

On 2nd October we embark on our first long distance journey of the season - Blackburn Away.

The date coincides with Rugby Leagues Grand Final at Old Trafford; so the plan is to break our journey home to watch the game.

The provisional timings are

- Leave Blackburn club house at 5pm
- Travel to Lancaster, find a pub, watch the match
- Leave Lancaster between 8.30 pm and 9.00 pm [exact time to be agreed with coach driver]
- Arrive back Cockermouth and Aspatria around 10.30 pm

I understand that several players are travelling by car to Blackburn then going direct to Old Trafford. Would those who are doing so please ensure England Rock and Mike are made aware of your plans in good time so that we can consider reducing the size of the coach to Blackburn. This will make the journey cheaper and faster.

I have the sad duty to inform all attached to the Aspatria club that Jackie Barton has passed away.

Jackie was a life member of the club. He played most of his rugby in the 50's, 60's and very early 70's. He would tell you himself that he was never one of the clubs greats but a more hard working player you could not meet. Above all he was reliable and never let anyone down.

I came to know Jackie towards the end of his playing days when we both packed down for the 2nd XV. His position then was hooker or back row depending on where he was needed. Too say the least he was an uncompromising opponent. He kept in touch with club affairs over the years and was a regular visitor to Bower Park when his health allowed.

A really nice bloke. A minutes silence will take place before our game on 18th September to mark Jackie's passing.

Barney Clegg

Unfortunately not many clubs in the league have yet updated their web sites with a match report so we cannot publish what they are thinking about their result from round 1.

Any prediction made now is no more than a stab in the dark but here goes. Please feel free to add your own thoughts as a comment on this article. News from other clubs is also very welcome. I would be particularly interested to hear views on the new bonus point system. At Bower Park on Saturday, Keswick got their well deserved point in the bag with 4 tries before half time. Was this the first bonus point earned under the new regime?

AROUND THE LEAGUE WITH EAGLE EYE

Aspatria will be delighted to get a win in the opening game of the season. This was a close run affair with the lead changing hands 7 times and the result in doubt up to the last few minutes. The Black Reds were short of several key players but most of these are likely to be in contention for Saturday's away fixture at Workington. On Saturday the controlling hand of No10 Mike Scott was all over the game. The backline has had few opportunities to play as a unit and will improve co-ordination as the season progress's - in particular Ricky Holliday was looking sharp. The forwards just about shaded the contest and there was some hard yards made by Adam Birkett and Jesse Thompsom. Finally a mention for scrum half, Jack Clegg whose 7 conversions from 7 attempts [3 from wide out] helped shade the game in favour of the home side.

Blackburn as anticipated got off to a flyer against Oldham. We have met Blackburn in several games over the past few seasons - usually in a relegation clash. This season might just be different. They are a great crowd of lads at Blackburn and we look forward to our clash in October.

Didsbury surprised quite a few pundits with a solid win across town, in Salford. Unfortunately, I know little about either club so difficult to judge where abouts in the pecking order they are heading. Comments from either club would be welcome. Lets get to know each other.

St Benedicts were expected to commence the campaign with a home win. Clearly, Eccles had other ideas and took the points in a close finish. Any team will have to work hard to come away from West Cumbria with points and too my mind this gives Eccles the performance of the round award. Well done lads.

Upper Eden were not much fancied pre season but they will be boosted by a win over Fleetwood. Again the relative strengths of each club are unknown and I wouldn't want to read over much into this result. Things might be a bit clearer after next Saturday's round of games.

Whitehaven were promoted from the Cumbria leage and will have been well aware that tougher opposition awaited them. Furness have lost a couple of their star players to Kendal but would still have fancied their chances at The Playground. For Whitehaven it was probably all about the result in their first start at this level. Congratulations on your win lads.

The game of the day was at Workington where the home side shaded Heaton Moor. Based on last season's performance, both teams are expected to be in the thick of the promotion race and this result will not change that view. The scoreline seems to confirm that both possess a cutting edge in attack.

MEL'S NOTES

We had a squad of 23 names for the game on Saturday and eventually travelled with 19 lads for the game at Netherhall. Our Young side was out muscled by a more robust side and went down heavily. We had no ref so David Atkinson must be thanked for stepping in otherwise no game would have taken place. Good to see Jason Spires back after long lay off and very positive that we had a young squad to choose from. All Eagles reminded of importance of training on Thursdays as well as Tuesdays if they can make it............................By email from Mel Hanley

Unfortunately, due to injury problems the 1st XV had to call up a number of Eagles regulars for the clash against Keswick. The knock on effect of this was that we weren't as competitive at Netherhall as we expected to be. However, I understand from those who travelled to Maryport that the lads put up stubborn resistance throughout the game and were unlucky to come away with a blank score sheet.

The lads should be encourage by the numbers that were available for the game and this should boost training numbers on Tuesday and Thursday. If everyone is back as anticipated there may be some selection headaches for the coaching team.

The really good news - for rugby in Cumbria - is that all scheduled games went ahead as planned. Let's hope this is a beginning on the long trek to make the Cumbria league attractive to those clubs who currently choose not to participate.

Latest Results: Round 1 - 4th September
